ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. – Tyler Driever became the first repeat winner of the 2021 season in ASCS Frontier Region sprint car competition when he snagged the victory Saturday night at Sweetwater Speedway in Wyoming, increasing his lead in the points standings in the process.
The just turned 19-year-old from Meridian, Idaho took advantage of traffic and got around Friday night winner Colby Thornhill for the lead going down the back stretch around the midway point of the event. Driever led from there, picking up his second win of the season aboard his family’s No. 33t Shark-powered Maxim.
With his $1,500 victory, Driever increased his lead over Kory Wermling to 53 points with eight scheduled events remaining. Saturday’s win was perhaps a little more special to Driever. His mother Lea, who is usually at all of his races, was not able to be there for his first career sprint car win last month at Big Sky Speedway but this time was able to celebrate a win with her son in person.
Logan Forler of Boise, Idaho finished runner-up for the second night in row aboard his family’s No. 2L Fischer-powered Maxim. He inherited the position after Thornhill shredded a right rear tire and came to a stop. Forler kept pace with Driever from there, closing a couple of times as they navigated much slower traffic and got a run on Driever on the final lap but ran out of time.
Zac Taylor of nearby Green River, Wyoming earned hard charger honors as he stormed from the 20th and final starting position and very quickly got into the Top 10 in the first several laps, and eventually picked off more cars to finish third in the Taylor Racing No. 86 USA Performance-powered Triple X. Taylor was put in the hole to start with when he was unable to start his heat race due to a fuel problem. For his troubles Taylor earned a $100 hard charger bonus that was put up for grabs by a member of the ASCS Frontier Region staff.
Damon McCune, who is from Montana but was driving the Pirate Racing entry that is based in Rock Springs – the location of Sweetwater Speedway – finished fourth and was able to get back by Trever Kirkland for fifth place in the points standings. Kirkland’s run of four consecutive podium finishes ended after contact from another car damaged his machine beyond immediate repair. That other car was black flagged for rough driving as he had struck Kirkland’s car and several others during the preceding caution and again immediately on the restart and causing the multi-car incident.
Wermling finished fifth and continues to hold second place in the points standings, 14 tallies ahead of Forler. Thornhill stormed back to take sixth place in the closing laps after losing his tire. C.J. Thorne, Michael Bingham, Shad Petersen and Darren Smith rounded out the Top 10.
Heat races earlier in the evening were won by McCune, Driever and Kirkland.
The series next races on Friday, August 27th at Gallatin Speedway in Belgrade, Montana. The next night, August 28th, is the Harvey Ostermiller Memorial at Big Sky Speedway outside Billings, Montana. The ASCS Frontier Region returns to Sweetwater Speedway on September 3rd and 4th before visiting Desert Thunder Raceway in Price, Utah for the first time on September 5th and 6th.
