PRICE, Utah – Logan Forler continued his late season surge Monday night, scoring his series leading fourth ASCS Frontier Region sprint car victory in a special Labor Day event at Desert Thunder Raceway.
The Boise, Idaho driver started sixth in the main event and had driven up to third place in the opening laps. He then took over second place when Meridian, Idaho’s Tyler Driever, the driver chasing Forler in the points, was held up by a slower car and Forler took advantage and moved by, taking third place points man Kory Wermling with him. Forler then inherited the lead with 16 laps completed when race long leader Garen Linder spun out after contact with a slower car. Forler took off from there, taking the victory in his No. 2L Fischer-powered Maxim and significantly increased his points lead over Driever.
It could’ve easily been not to be for Forler long before the main event, as on the initial start of his heat race both he and Helena, Montana’s Trever Kirkland ended up flying off the track in Turn 1 and out of everyone’s view, making the track officials throw the red flag fearing they likely went for a tumble. Amazingly however, neither driver went upside down and both drivers actually rolled back onto the race track to restart their heat race, and Forler drove from the back to finish second and earn his place in the redraw for the main event.
Driever was running in the Top 5 on the final lap when his right rear tire cut down as he exited Turn 4 for the checkered flag, sending him spinning around and coming to stop just feet short of the finish line. Not crossing the line, Driever was scored in sixth place, the first car one lap down. As a result, Forler’s points lead grew to 39 points unofficially with two races remaining.
Wermling, out of Great Falls, Montana finished second in his family’s No. 9k Moyle-powered CS9, and after Driever’s misfortune he was able to close to within 12 points unofficially of Driever in the standings.
Linder, who won Saturday night at Sweetwater Speedway in Wyoming and finished second to Trever Kirkland in the series’ debut at Desert Thunder Raceway Sunday night, drew the pole position for the feature and immediately motored away from everyone, at one point leading by more than a straightaway. The Central Point, Oregon driver seemed destined for his second win of the holiday weekend when he made contact with a slower car in Turn 1 and spun around. Linder went to the back following the mishap but stormed back to finish third in his No. 22 Ryder-powered KPC.
South Dakota visitor Ned Powers finished fourth after driving by a disabled Driever just before the finish line and Kirkland finished fifth, the last car on the lead lap. Driever, Darren Smith, Channing Filler, C.J. Thorne and Mike Manwill completed the Top 10.
Heat races earlier in the evening were won by Linder, Powers and Wermling.
The ASCS Frontier Region concludes its 2021 season with two events in Montana this weekend. The series visits Gallatin Speedway in Belgrade for the Big Sky Supernationals on Friday night before wrapping things up at Big Sky Speedway outside Billings on Saturday. A live band will be playing after the races Saturday night.
